LOL - the pina coladas are where it's at. And Cuba is such a beautiful island, we've been on beaches all over, and nothing compares to Cuba's white sands and turqoise water.

Yep, the situation in Cuba has gotten only worse, not better, sadly. Common place items like eggs and milk are heavily rationed and only obtainable on the black market at high costs. Consumer electronics are not really available at all unless a relative from the US gets them over. People don't earn anywhere close to a subsistence wage and everything costs a lot. The worst part is that it wasn't always like that and Cuba has the resources of being a prosperous nation. The coffee, sugar and fruit alone could give them a great market, but the embargo and the inefficiencies of centralized planning keep it from happening.

What a nice post! Raul sounds like a really nice kid; just trying to survive in this world. It's really nice that you are trying to help him. I haven't been to Cuba in 20 years, and yet from reading this, not much has changed it seems. Even then, I remember leaving behind certain items to the locals, like a pair of sandals or a sweater that I personally didn't think was anything special. I guess we take life for granted here in Canada, not realizing the struggles people face daily around the world.

On a less serious note, I am soooooooo envious of your trip! That photo is where I want to be. And pina coladas? Bring 'em on!
